[INTERVIEW] ☆ Reason why these Ikemen (flower boys) w/ average age of 20 keep on striving for “fans”

Ikemen Princes - NU'EST with an average age of 20 will release the long-awaited first album “Bridge the World” in about a year from his debut in Japan!

It includes the two songs from the Japanese Single, but also newly recorded original 6 songs including the main theme song of a movie which will be released in January next year, a piece of a live-like composition. In addition, 2 of the tracks are in english ver. As the title’s meaning “Let’s bridge the world”, the album was finished as an album for fans all over the world.​

◆ NU'EST’s Japan Debut 1 year “Return love to fans”

Woman Insight Editorial Department (WI) It’s been a year since you guys debuting in Japan. I think you’ve experienced a variety of things, so how was this year?

Baekho It was a very meaningful time for us. I had many different feelings during our activities in Japan, so I think that it was an important year for future activities.​ Minhyun That’s right. And since I first worked in Japan, I had many fans cheer for us. It was a year we’ve “returned” the love we’ve received so far but I would like to return even more from now on.

WI In the past year, you have made a lot of efforts as NU'EST, but as individuals too.

Minhyun Yes. I especially studied Japanese for Japanese activities. I couldn’t speak at all a year ago, so I did my best.

JR I’m doing my best for writing “lyrics” this year. I am still studying, but it’s very funny and I feel excited when I’m doing it. I think that I’m able to show off my skills someday in front of fans.

Aron I began to study techniques of video editing. The reason I began was that I thought that I would like photos taken by me upload to SNS for everyone to see, fans who don’t have many opportunity to meet us. I also bought a video camera, so I’d like you to look forward to it.

Ren How are fan’s going to do it, what are they willing to do? …I think about it every day. For example, I thought about my own comment to talk about at the tour in Autumn, but the fan who heard it said “I was impressed” and I was really happy about it.

Baekho It’s not a personal opinion, but we, NU'EST, wanted to show off a different form on this autumn tour, so we thought about the composition and made an interesting stage. Although it was serious, I’m satisfied because I think that we were able to give a good performance.

WI During the autumn tour, you went to the back of the first floor and ran to the second floor during the performance, and then ran back to the stage … and so on, didn’t you?

Baekho That was interesting, wasn’t it? (laughs)

Minhyun It would be useless if we were to be in time, so it was fun to run powerfully and say, “Wow!” (Laughs)

WI Everyone thinks NU'EST gives an impression that they will always make lives and events with their fans, but it seems like it was a universal tour this time. Despite my thinking that all lives are the same, did you guys have a moment when everybody felt happy?

Baekho I had a throat surgery and had been away from the team for a while since last winter, but in March during our performance in Nagoya (the first day of “SHOW TIME 3”), everyone picked up a paper with the greeting “Baekho, Welcome back!” and I cried when I saw it … …. I think that I was truly happy that time.

JR That’s right. I was happy because on our autumn tour the representative of the Korean office has come. It’s the second time he came to see our performances in Japan, It’s probably the first time in about three years, and I was very happy to be able to show him our growing selves during the years.

Ren It’s also about the tour, but I was really happy that I could meet with all the new fans, talk to them and see everyone’s smiles. We’ve got a lot of support, so I thought that we can work anytime harder.

JR Wonderful!

Minhyun Last year, when we were asked about the goal for next year (2015), we answered with “We want to act”. That hope has come true this year!

JR & Ren That’s right!

Minhyun It’s a movie filmed in Japan and I’m really happy to be able to act in Japanese.

WI On behalf of the members, Ren is going to the red carpet and stage greetings from the Tokyo International Film Festival (* I did an interview before the Tokyo International Film Festival started).

JR That’s why us four have some time off! Great! (laughs)

Minhyun Ren, on behalf of NU'EST, please let me know more about us (laugh).

Baekho The greeting isn’t “I’m Ren”, but “I’m NU'EST Ren” (laugh).

JR Just by our feelings, we are walking along the red carpet together. Nice to meet you!

WI Has everyone else really some time off?

Minhyun It’s true (laughs). First of all, I’ll take a good nap.

Baekho And I think about going out to play (laughs). Even though I can get on one by myself, we can take a ride on a train like …. the “JR Yamanote Line” or something (laughs).

JR Riding me? (laughs)

Minhyun Ah~~ it’s no fun ~! (laughs)

Here’s a little story behind. The other four members, beside Ren who attended the Tokyo International Film Festival, have “completely off”. So, JR’s friend came from South Korea and said “I will go to Akihabara* with my otaku friends!”, in this story it’s told “what an Otaku”….

{ T/N: *Akihabara is known as Tokyo’s “Electric Town”, because lot’s of major electronic stores can be found in this area. Among Otakus this area is really popular. }

◆ Ren is an “Self Otaku”? Members revealed, he spends “1 hour in front of the mirror in the morning”

JR My Friends coming from Korea are also “otakus” (laughs).

Minhyun When it’s holidays, JR, spends all day watching anime, playing games on the bed, that’s it … (laughs). Basically, I’ve been watching dramas and movies, and reading books all the time in the dorm.

Baekho Minhyun is kinda the same as JR, just the genre is different., he’s a “Dorm Otaku”. I’m not an otaku, I’m just a funny guy (laughs)

Aron I also watch anime, but I’m not an hardcore otaku like JR (laughs).

JR When I meet friends I’ll confront them with the character names in the anime.

All wow ~! Seriously what a nerd! (Laughs)

Ren I often watch movies, but not Otaku-like movies.

Minhyun Ren is a.. “Secret Otaku”?

JR He is different. “Self Otaku”!

Baekho He likes himself a lot (laugh).

JR He loves himself so so so much! Ren is sleeping now in the living room, but he’s spending the whole time watching himself in the mirror in the morning until I’m taking a shower and coming out again (laughs)

Minhyun He’ll get up early, then will be watching his face in a mirror for about an hour (laugh).

Ren Wah~~~~~ !! (laughs)

JR Maybe when we’re not watching, you say to yourself in the mirror, “Today Ren is cool too!” (Laughs).

Ren (threw the piece of paper he held in his hand to JR) It’s definitely not like this !! (laughs)

JR It came from the practice time that Ren likes himself, but recently it became stronger. It’s good like this though. We are entertainers! (laughs)

In the second part of the interview we talk about their favorite songs of the album, the story of “a drink” that Ren is hooked with in Japan, up to the audult’s oath of NU'EST, who all celebrated being 20 years old …

Woman Insight Editorial Department (WI) The first Japanese album will finally come out in Japan for the first time since your debut in Japan, can you each tell me about your favorite song from the album?

JR For me it’s “Access to You”. It’s one of the new songs with the most emphasis in the album, and it’s the song I think did fit best of all the live opening songs we ever had till now. It’s also a song which helped me during our autumn tour (“NU'EST Japan Tour 2015 - Bridge the World ~”) so I also love it!

Ren My recommendation is the movie theme song “Cherry”. The song itself gives a cute atmosphere so it’s dance is suitable for a cute wibe and the lyrics are very deep.

I like sexy songs, so I really is recommend it.

Aron For me it’s “Let’s go Crazy!” I like it the most. It’s a song that will make you feel lively or makes you exciting, and I think that fans can enjoy it together.​

Minhyun I think that every track is a good song, but for me “Koisuru Hi” is special (only included in the limited Album Ver. B). It’s my first solo song as a singer, and it’s a song that I wrote myself inspired by my favorite TVXQ songs. Usually I always record only my part. But for my solo song, I sang everything from the beginning to the end and the best one got recorded. It was a bit tough, but it’s a great honor for me to have a solo song and I’m full of gratitude.

Baekho “Ame nochi eien” is my favorite song. The Lyrics are good, it’s a very moving song.

Minhyun During our lives or events it’s really “raining” alot, so it would be nice to continue selling rain songs in the future (Laughs).

WI As NU'EST’s “five elements” I have listed “youth” “beautiful voice” “visual” “performance” “LOVE” in advance, but what’s one thing that is personally essential for you ?

Aron For me “family.”

Baekho “Calpis”. Calpis (a uncarbonated soft drink) flows in my body because I’m always drinking it (laughs).

Minhyun For me it’s “song”! It’s always flowing in my body (laughs).

Baekho For me it’s also “song”! (Laugh) For JR it’s “rice”? (laughs)

JR Yes. “White rice”! Rice is important. If you don’t eat properly in the morning, you won’t have any power (laughs).

Ren For me it’s “fan” after all!

WI Since the word “Fan” came up, could you tell me your currently number 1 “LOVE” (*“ Love "is a generic term for fans of NU'EST)?

Baekho It’s Ren.

Ren Love you too (laughs)

JR For me Ren too ~!

Minhyun For everyone it’s Ren (laughs).

Ren I also love everyone in NU'EST (laughs).

WI By the way, do you have any Japanese "LOVE” food?

Minhyun Don’t you have one, Ren? Even he’s a bit far away from one, he’d definitely go to FamilyMart and buy his favorite drink.

Ren It’s a yogurt drink that’s only available in FamilyMart! Ordinary yogurt is sour, but FamilyMart’s one is sweet and sour mixed and I’m addicted to it.

WI Fans may go to Family Mart after reading this. At the end of this year everyone will be an adult. Please give me an adult’s oath as to what kind of adult you want to become.

Aron I’m already 22 years old, but I want to become an adult who has a sense of responsibility to my family.

Minhyun I’d like to act with a feeling of appreciation for all things.

Ren We’d like to be singers whose activities getting better results, getting the 1st place in the Oricon chart in Japan or becoming 1st in a korean music program.

Baekho I always want to laugh and have fun.

JR Because we all become 20 years old, I want to become a person who works hard for small things with responsibility for my actions. Everyone of us 5 in NU'EST … …!

After the interview, Ren celebrated his 20th birthday on November 3, so all NU'EST became adults. Until the end of November, NU'EST fly around the country during the release event. This shooting used “scarfs” as props. I asked them to select 5 different patterns. It’s hard to understand it just by looking at the photo, but all five scarfs are connected. Although they are connected by using pins, it’s depending on the members as they pinned the adjacent scarf themselves .

… JR and Minhyun stopped talking, while connecting their scarfs together, to see how beautifully it looks. While doing the interview, it’s always like this, “We do everything we can do ourselves” is NU'EST style!​
