“Just the way they really are”… The value of the sincerity shown by Kim Jong Hyun and IU

Idols who have made their mark on the K-pop industry are now entering the variety show world. NU’EST’s Kim Jong Hyun and IU are capturing the hearts of viewers by shedding their flashy images as singers and just being who they really are.

Kim Jong Hyun is receiving a lot of love from the public through JTBC’s variety show “Night Goblin,” where he plays the role of the youngest member, Baby Goblin. “Night Goblin” is a program that follows the cast members every week as they fight to be the first to eat the hottest foods out there.

“Night Goblin” features variety show veterans like Lee Soo Geun, Jung Hyung Don, and Park Sung Gwang. But it’s Kim Jong Hyun’s appearance on the show that’s shining brighter than ever. Since making his debut in 2012, Kim Jong Hyun has been playing the role of a responsible leader, and he’s recently become the center of the spotlight in the variety world.

Because this is his first time being a regular on a variety show, he never backs down, no matter what the other older members throw at him, and he’s owning his role as the cute, youngest member. He’s become even more approachable to the general public with an unexpected charm that is different from when he’s on stage. From not being very athletic at all, contrary to people’s expectations of him, to unexpectedly being a little air-headed, Kim Jong Hyun sometimes has the entire set laughing with a charm that even the older cast members praise him for.

IU has also succeeded in capturing the hearts of the public on JTBC’s variety show “Hyori’s Homestay” with a charm that she’s never been able to showcase before. “Hyori’s Homestay” is a reality program that gave Lee Hyori and Lee Sang Soon the opportunity to open their house to people as a guesthouse and connect with actual guests. IU initially confessed that she finds it hard to talk to strangers, and true to her words, she would be awkward around guests at first before warming up to them.

Never forgetting her role as as an employee of the guesthouse, IU stood out as she followed her boss, Lee Hyori, around and always tried to do as much as possible, especially when it came to doing the dishes. She made the program feel even more sincere and real as she set aside her flashy stage outfits and makeup and stayed almost makeup-free the whole time. It must not have been easy for her to do that, even for a variety show, when she’s at an age when appearances matter a lot.

IU turned down all sponsorships from clothing brands to fit the variety show’s premise, and she is said to have not received help from a stylist either. She seemed to be at ease with this decision, and that’s what made her shine even brighter.

Kim Jong Hyun and IU are shining, not only in the music industry, but in the variety show world as well. They are gifting viewers with laughter and healing as they show themselves just the way they are. It will be exciting to see what the two people will do in the future.
